When a person has an upset stomach, there are questions that need to be asked before taking any medication or herbal remedies. It is necessary to know if the upset stomach is chronic, if the person is hungry, what was consumed before the incident, how sharp the pain is, if the person has a fever, is nauseous, vomiting, has diarrhea, or is constipated.
There are some instances than an upset stomach can lead to a viral infection or it may be a symptom of stomach health problems such as gastritis, hyper-acidity, or ulcers. If the person wants to take medicine, it is best to ask for doctor what to take, but relief can be give to help calm an upset stomach:
Take hot tea or light broth soups. Sipping a cup of chamomile or barley tea, or having a bowl of clear chicken broth can help soothe the stomach upset.
Rub the stomach area with herbal oil. Apply a generous amount of chamomile oil, Aceite de manzanilla, to the stomach area and rub it around in long circular strokes.
Go to the bathroom. Having a bowel movement may be able to get rid of the unwanted elements that is causing the stomach upset.
Release the gas. If you notice the stomach area is bloated and when it is tapped makes a drumming sound, then the problem might be gas. Burping or passing gas to get rid of the trapped gases in the stomach.
Hot water bottle. Placing a hot water bottle on the tummy can help calm it. Fill the hot water bottle, wrap it with a thin towel if it is too hot for the skin, lie down and place it on the stomach for about 15 minutes.
Bed rest. It is time to take a rest and maybe after a short nap, the person will feel better.
Fermented milk drinks. Drinking a couple of fermented milk drinks, like Yakult that contains lactic acid bacteria can improve of the human intestinal microflora and help calm a upset stomach.
If the upset stomach is chronic, if it it occurs in a child under the age of 6, or the one who is suffering is elderly, seek medical treatment.
