A constantly running toilet is more than just an annoyance; it can cost you plenty of money by wasting gallons and gallons of water everyday. In most cases, a running toilet is an easy enough fix that you won’t need to enlist the help of a professional plumber.

In order to fix a running toilet, you need to identify the source of the problem. To do this, remove the top of the toilet tank and watch as you flush. Identify the important parts of the flushing process – the flapper that opens and seals the hole that empties the tank, the chain that lifts and lowers the flapper, the float that causes the water to stop running when the tank is full and the hose that fills the tank. The keep a close eye on everything as you flush to determine your problem.

The fix may be something incredibly simply like the chain that pulls the flapper up being tangled – if that’s the case, untangling the chain to let the flapper create a tight seal may do the trick. If the chain is too long, it may be getting trapped between the flapper and the hole, which will prevent a tight seal. You can remedy a long chain by removing a few links.

Examine the flapper itself – if it appears old, worn or cracked your fix may require you replacing it. Replacing a flapper is an easy job as well; they are readily available at hardware stores and most simply snap in and out of the hinges in seconds.

If the flapper isn’t getting hung up, if it appears clean and it is making a tight seal, your problem may be with the float. Make sure the float ball isn’t cracked and filled with water preventing in from floating, if it is and you need to replace it, it should simply screw off of the lever arm for removal and the new one will screw right on.
