Cold sore are skin eruptions that will first appear as red mounds and will puff up like pimples, and sooner or later develop, enlarge, and blister. These small, open, round sores may develop a bacterial infection and pus will emit from the sore. Cold sores are a form of herpes and are contagious.
The first thing to do upon spotting a cold sore is to clean it. Make sure that the area is clean during the entire time the cold sore is present to prevent bacterial activity. There are a number of cleansing products that you can use, but an alkaline based, anti-bacterial soap product is best and should be at least 4 times a day. You can also clean the cold sore by using hydrogen peroxide, and the bubbles that you see upon pouring it on will indicate the bacteria being eliminated by the solution. There are some people who wash the cold sore with hot green or black tea. These herbal remedy can work wonders in reducing any inflammation present.
Cold sores tend to be painful, and it is possible to take pain-killers to numb the pain. Many people seek to soothe the open wound with an application of olive oil, emu oil, Vaseline petroleum jelly, or the gel of the Aloe Vera plant. There are also over-the counter cold sore removal products that will provide pain-relief and hasten the curing period. Some people pour alcohol or nail polish remover onto the sore, but you have to be aware that these products may hurt upon application and are not to be used in getting rid of cold sores.
Taking medication to will help hasten the curing process and prevent cold sores from coming back. There are some meds that you can buy without a prescription, but it is best to consult a dermatologist or a doctor on what to use as your oral intake will be based on your medical history and the severity of the problem.
