Standing straight and tall is great for your confidence, it helps you get noticed and it can make your body look and feel better, but if you’re a long time sloucher you may have a bit of work cut out for you to break those bad habits.
Start by closely evaluating your standing posture and identifying the points of your body that are the biggest parts of the problem. You’ll have to concentrate on holding that head up high, straightening those shoulders and sucking in that belly to form the straight line of good posture. Good posture means keeping your ears, shoulder, hips, knees and ankles in alignment – try achieving that perfect straight line in the mirror and learn what it feels like, then practice, practice, practice.
How your sitting could be posing as much of a problem to your posture as how you’re standing. Adjust your computer chair so that your knees are level with your hips when your feet are flat on the ground, and once you’ve found that adjustment, keep it that way. You also need to make an effort to keep your back against the back of your chair when seated; rolling your shoulders forward or hunching over to get closer to your computer screen will not help your posture in the least. If your desk chair is old an uncomfortable, it might be time to upgrade to an ergonomically correct model that will provide you with the exact type of support that you need for improving your posture.
Once you’ve put a little bit of effort into your posture and you begin to feel the positive health benefits, working on your posture and consciously standing up (and sitting up) straight will be something that you’ll be eager to do and it won’t be long before having perfect posture feels completely natural, even if you had been slouching for years.
