There are thousands of people who are now suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome because of the way that they keep on moving their hands in routine motions like that of typing on the keyboards of the computer or moving and clicking on the mouse. Getting carpal tunnel syndrome is not exclusive to those who use a computer for a long period of time, but can happen to anyone who uses their hands to labor. When the median nerve which runs all the way from the hand to the forearm becomes pressed or squeezed in the wrist, where the carpal tunnel is, pain and numbness occurs. The carpal tunnel is a passageway for nerves found at the base of the hands and it surrounded by ligaments and tendons that can become swollen and inflamed by certain hand and wrist long term actions.
Symptoms
The fingers may feel numb, have tingling or burning sensations, and will it affect the accomplishment of simple tasks due to the lack of movement or pain. The wrists will be flexed when relaxed as the person with this syndrome will encounter difficulty in keeping it in a normal position and stretching it out. When this condition is extreme, the person will not be able to grasp things properly as they have a poor grip which is one of the results of this syndrome. Sometimes, the hands gets so affected by the pinched median nerve that its sense of touch will degenerate so much, the person can no longer feel if something is hot or cold.
Treatment
There are a variety of treatments that can be done to help a patient who is suffering from carpal tunnel. The most common one is that of medication that will get rid of the pain and lessen the swelling and inflammation of the ligaments and tendons. For extreme cases, surgery can be performed. To reduce the swelling and inflammation, a cooling pack may be applied, if there is no more swelling, a heating pad can be used to encourage blood circulation.
The other ways of treating carpal tunnel syndrome is by bracing the hands. For severe cases, the hands will be immobilized by means of a splint, similar to that used for a broken wrist. Hand braces that look similar to gloves are recommended to ensure that the hands will no longer be subjected to being strained. If a person who has carpal tunnel syndrome wears a hand brace while resting or for an extended period of time, it can aid their recovery. Wearing glove hand braces and avoiding the specific activity for a period of time may help get rid of carpal tunnel syndrome and can alleviate the stress to your hands are under while doing routine tasks.
